Bystander Intervention

Tigers Take Action: Creating a Safer Mizzou Together

At Mizzou, we believe every student, staff and faculty member has a role in creating a campus where everyone feels safe, supported and valued. Through this initiative, we’re empowering our community to step in and make a difference when it matters most.

Available Interventions

Step in. Speak up. Empower change.

Empowered, Mizzou’s bystander intervention program, helps individuals recognize potentially harmful situations and equips them with tools to safely intervene. This initiative addresses key issues that affect our campus, including:

  • Interpersonal violence
  • Substance misuse
  • Sense of belonging
  • Mental well-being and suicide prevention

This interactive program provides Mizzou students, faculty and staff the confidence and skills to prevent, reduce or respond to harm. Empowered can be facilitated for student organizations, classes, residence halls and other campus programs.

  • Mizzou CARES – Steps You Can Take in the Moment

If you witness a potentially harmful situation, you can:

    Create a distraction
    Act directly
    Refer to appropriate resource
    Enlist others
    Stop and act later

    Make a Hazing Report

Hazing violates university policy, state law and recognized student organization policies. You can make a confidential report through the Office of Student Accountability & Support or report anonymously by calling the UM system Compliance hotline 844-469-6383.
